During the 1960's, the afro was worn by African-American people as a statement that they wanted their freedoms and equality. Eventually, it evolved into its own fashion statement. Some were small, and some were large. It requires a lot of care and management to keep, but it is considered rewarding to have one. Even today, some people still have afros and follow the "Happy to be Nappy" ideals, to keep your hair natural and let it out, not keep it down. Some people keep video logs to encourage and inspire others to keep their "nappy" hair, like YouTube user JodieTheNutter. Some stars use afros occaisonally, like Lauryn Hill or Ludacris. From then until now, the afro is still considered incredibly attractive and adored by some, and incredibly ugly and hated by others. Yes, the afro recieves very mixed opinions.
