What it is
A fad, craze, is a fashion that becomes popular in a culture (or subcultures) relatively quickly, remains popular, often for a rather brief period, then loses popularity dramatically.
However, some fads may come back if another generation finds out about it and gets interested in it.
For example Dayglo paint and clothing was a fad in Europe and the USA the late 1970s. Then Dayglo accessories and clothes (such as cycling shorts and Dayglo socks) had a come back in 1984–1989.
The playing of chatter rings were a huge fad in New Zealand from mid 1996 until early 1997, then all but disappeared. Recently however, in 2011, chatter rings have made a strong comeback in New Zealand.
A fad that remains popular for a significant amount of time typically loses its significance in current popular culture as it evolves and becomes accepted into a society's everyday culture (e.g., television, Internet).
A fad on YTMND is something that is varied and repeated on many different sites, not something that is done once and becomes popular.
- Nigga Stole My Bike is a fad because it has been parodied and re-done ad infinitum.
- "YTMND Conference" is not (despite high views and ratings) because, while incredibly popular, it has not been parodied and repeated a considerable number of times.
Until something is repeated/parodied significantly, it isn't a fad.
