A screen type set up, which resembled today's computer monitor, and you removed a black screen with holes, slid in a black sheet of paper which had letters (for the colors it used within that certain hole), and you put the screen back in place, plugged it in, and put colored plastic pegs in the holes, and you created some awesome looking pictures, it was a blast!

You could make your own designs or use paper ones provided with the toy.
